The rugged knives are over 1/2" thick, and can be sharpened up to 50 times.

The rugged knives are counter sunk inside the knife holder.  The stress of chipping is therefore absorbed by the entire backside of the knife, not just the bolts.  This is a safety feature found in high-end chippers.   Both ends of the knife are covered, so twigs and other materials do not get hung up on the knives.  This enables the chipper to also be used for shredding paper.
